Everything you need to know before you get started — or while you're building.
Getting Started
Is BECOMING free to use?
+
Yes — BECOMING is free to get started. Create your account, set up your identity words, goals, habits, and accountability partners at no cost. We'll introduce premium features as the platform grows, but the core experience will always be accessible.
Do I need to download an app?
+
No download required. BECOMING runs directly in your browser on any device — phone, tablet, or computer. Just go to the-becoming-app.com/app and you're in. Your data syncs automatically across all your devices when you use the same email.
How is BECOMING different from other habit apps?
+
Most habit apps track what you do. BECOMING starts with who you are. Before you set a single goal or habit, you define your identity — your words, your becoming statements, your mission. Everything else flows from that. Goals, habits, rewards, and accountability are all tied back to who you've declared yourself to be. It's not a to-do list. It's a becoming system.
How long does onboarding take?
+
About 15-20 minutes for a thorough setup — choosing your identity words, writing your becoming statements, setting goals, building habits, and adding accountability partners. You can also move through it faster and come back to fill things in later. Nothing is locked.
Identity & Becoming Statements
What are "becoming words"?
+
Becoming words are 3-5 words that describe who you are at your best — Faithful, Disciplined, Present, Courageous, Generous. They're not aspirations. They're declarations. Every habit and goal you set gets tied back to these words, so you're always building toward an identity, not just checking boxes.
What is a becoming statement?
+
For each word you choose, you write 1-2 sentences that define what it means for you — specifically — to live that word. Not a dictionary definition. A personal declaration. "I am disciplined — I wake up with intention, protect my mornings, and do the hard thing first." The app provides prompts to help you write yours. These statements are what greet you every time you open BECOMING.
Can I change my words later?
+
Yes — anytime. Go to Settings → Edit Words & Statements to update your words, rewrite your statements, or adjust your mission. At the end of each year, BECOMING also gives you the option to carry your words forward or start completely fresh.
Habits & Goals
What's the difference between a habit and a goal in BECOMING?
+
A goal is a specific outcome with a deadline — the destination. "Run a half marathon by December." A habit is a repeated behavior with no finish line — the road. "Run 4x per week." Goals tell you where you're going. Habits are how you get there. BECOMING tracks both and ties them to your identity words.
What habit frequencies are available?
+
BECOMING supports daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly habits. Each has its own tracking view in the dashboard — a daily grid, weekly circles, monthly toggles, and quarterly checkpoints. You can have as many habits as you want across all four frequencies.
Can I add my own habits and goals, or am I limited to suggestions?
+
Both. BECOMING offers personalized suggestions based on your identity words and profile, but you can always write your own. The " Other" tab lets you add goals and habits that don't fit neatly into any of your words — for big life goals, personal projects, or anything else that matters to you.
Accountability
Do I need an accountability partner?
+
No — it's optional. But research consistently shows that people who share their goals and check in regularly are significantly more likely to follow through. If you have someone in your life who will hold you to your word, adding them as a partner is one of the highest-leverage things you can do in BECOMING.
How do accountability alerts work?
+
Every Monday morning, BECOMING checks each user's habit completion for the prior week. If your completion drops below 35%, your accountability partners are automatically sent an email letting them know you need some encouragement. You set who gets notified and how during onboarding — and you can update it anytime.
What is a "Becoming Mentor" and how do I request one?
+
A Becoming Mentor is a certified guide who works with you personally — helping you define your identity, set meaningful goals, and stay accountable over time. During onboarding (or in Settings), toggle on "Request a Becoming Mentor" and Trevor will reach out directly to discuss how mentoring can work for you. You can also book a discovery session at calendly.com/trevor-the-becoming-app/30min.
Data & Privacy
Where is my data stored?
+
Your data is stored in two places: locally on your device (for instant access) and in a secure cloud database (for cross-device sync). Your cloud data is tied to your email address and protected at the database level. We never sell your data or share it with third parties.
Does my data sync across devices?
+
Yes. Enter the same email on any device and BECOMING will pull your complete profile, words, habits, goals, and history from the cloud. Changes you make on your phone show up on your computer and vice versa — automatically.
Can I delete my data?
+
Yes. Go to Settings → Start Over to permanently delete all your data — including your cloud record. This cannot be undone, so use it carefully. If you just want to reset a specific year, use the year selector to start a fresh year without deleting everything.
